Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students

Deaf and hard-of-hearing students are very much a part of campus life at BCC. The Program for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students at BCC provides total access for deaf and hard-of-hearing students and members of the community to all programs and activities at the college.

Qualified interpreters and notetakers are provided for classes and for conferences in any campus office. In addition, interpreting services are available for any student club activities, athletic and cultural events.

The Program Office, the Learning Assistance Center, Student Health Services and the Security Office are equipped with telephone typewriters (TTYs) that enable deaf and hard-of-hearing students to communicate by phone. An amplified phone is available in the Program Office.

Students with Disabilities

BCC is committed to providing students with access to the programs the college offers. To accomplish this, the Student Support Services Program and the Learning Assistance Center provide special services such as note-takers, readers, interpreters, adaptive testing, academic advisement, tutors, and counselors for students with disabilities. Access to buildings, classrooms, elevators, and locker space, is also arranged.Services for students with disabilities also include use of adaptive educational equipment, taped texts, and the TTY campus phone system for the hearing impaired. A range of services exists for students with learning disabilities.

A pamphlet, "Services for Students with Disabilities", is available upon request. This pamphlet and the BCC catalog are also available on audio tape.

Deafness or Hearing Loss

Students requesting accommodations on the basis of deafness or hearing loss must provide documentation consisting of:

  • An audiological evaluation and/or audiogram.
  • An interpretation of the functional implications of the diagnostic data and hearing aid evaluation, when appropriate.
  • Suggestions as to how the functionally limiting manifestations of the disabling condition(s) may be accommodated.
