"By maintaining a sound system of education you produce citizens of good character, and citizens of sound character"- Plato

"An enlightened citizenry is indispensable for the proper functioning of a republic. Self-government is not possible unless the citizens are educated sufficiently to enable them to exercise oversight"- Thomas Jefferson

About the Board and the Center:

Democracy requires citizens who, as “sovereigns”, can make sound decisions about public issues. Yet current communication and problem-solving approaches often prove counterproductive.  There are also important “disconnects” between citizens many of whom have withdrawn from political engagement. Solving the serious and complex problems that the United States faces, which do not always have technical solutions, calls for working through paradoxes and competing values that will require tough choices. Facing them and developing solutions requires productive collaboration from an engaged and reinvigorated citizenry.

BCC’s Civic Engagement Advisory Board (CEAB), which was reactivated in 2006, and BCC's Center for Civic Engagement recognize the need for the community to become re-engaged. As stated its By-Laws the objectives of the Civic Engagement Advisory Board, and by extension the Center, are: “to promote and foster political deliberation and involvement in the public square of the Southern Tier. It collaborates with community partners to foster knowledge, skills, attitudes and dispositions, which contribute to civic discourse and engagement."
